How to Track Your Cycle & Why It Matters
Letโs be real, your period doesnโt always show up when itโs convenient. One minute youโre living your best life, and the next, youโre digging through your bag for a pad you swear you packed. But what if you could actually predict what your bodyโs going to do, and plan around it?
Thatโs where cycle tracking comes in. Itโs not just about knowing when your next period is due but also about understanding your body, your mood, your energy, and everything in between. And once you get the hang of it, it can seriously change the game.
๐ So, How Do You Actually Track Your Cycle?
Your cycle starts on the first day of your period (a.k.a. Day 1) and ends the day before your next period starts.
Letโs say your period starts on July 1st and your next one starts on July 29thโthat means you have a 28-day cycle.
Hereโs how to keep track:
- Mark the first day of your period (thatโs Day 1).
- Count how many days your period lasts (usually 3โ7).
- Keep counting the days after it ends, all the way until your next period shows up.
- Repeat for a couple of months and youโll start to notice your own pattern.
You can jot it down in a notebook or use an app like Flo, Clue, Period Tracker or Health app on your IOS devices. Theyโll even send you reminders when your period or PMS is around the corner. Super helpful!
๐ What Else Should You Track?
Besides your period dates, it helps to keep an eye on other things your body is doing throughout the month, like:
- How heavy or light your flow is
- If youโre cramping or bloated
- Mood changes (hello, random irritation)
- Your energy levels. Some days youโll feel like a queen, other days not so much
- Breakouts, cravings, headaches, sleep, discharge, anxiety levels. You name it
The more you track, the more connected youโll feel to whatโs going on in your body.
๐ง Why Does Any of This Even Matter?
Because your period isnโt just a โ5-day thingโ, itโs part of a bigger cycle, and once you understand it, you can literally plan your life better.
Hereโs what tracking can help with:
๐ No more surprises โ Youโll know when your periodโs coming, so youโre never caught off guard.
๐ Spot your patterns โ Like when your mood dips or your energy spikes.
๐ฌ Talk to your doctor โ Youโll have answers when they ask, โWhen was your last period?โ
๐ธ Fertility awareness โ Whether youโre trying to get pregnant (or not), tracking helps you understand your ovulation window.
๐ Plan around your body โ Workouts, events, rest days; youโll know what your body needs and when.
๐ In a Nutshell:
Cycle tracking = knowing your body.
And when you know your body, you feel more confident, more in control, and way less surprised every month.
Whether youโre a notebook-and-pen girl or an app lover, the goal is the same: feel more in sync with yourself.
